A DRY AND WINDSWEPT BODY
Exhibited in He wāhi pāoro, Stepdown, Heretaunga Hastings
He wāhi pāoro brings together two video works by Ana Iti, I am a salt lake (2024) and A dry and windswept body (2025). Both take the salt lake at Kāpara-Te-Hau (Lake Grassmere) in Marlborough as a starting point to think about how we might relate and learn from the processes and cycles harnessed in the production of salt.
A dry and windswept body departs from I am a salt lake, returning to Kāpara-Te-Hau during the salt harvest. The video is composed from drone footage that moves above the lake, revealing its contours alongside the industrial processes operating on the site. As the drone scans the landscape, an accompanying audio track experiments with the textures and rhythms of breath, drawing a connection between the ruffled surface of the water and a soundscape structured by breathing.
